Under the Health and Safety at Work Act 1974, employers have a duty of care towardsthemselves, their employees and members of the public who come into contact with theirbusiness premises or undertakings. This should include a full and thorough review of risks acrossthe entire business.There are many reasons why businesses should think about health and safety but these areusually encompassed by three key elements; legal, moral and financial.Morally, businesses need to demonstrate that they care about the health and safety of their staff.Legally, with health and safety laws in place, it is the business's responsibility to put in controlmeasures to reduce potential risks. Financially, managing health and safety can save moneythrough reduced insurance premiums and safer and more effective ways of working.As you'll know, the Health & Safety Executive (HSE), the government agency responsible forregulating and enforcing workplace health and safety and welfare, perform random visits onfarms and in agricultural businesses. During these visits, they will check for faults and any oversight to health and safety measures. If a fault or breach of health and safety law isfound, the business will have to pay a fine, which is based on the business's turnover,and for the time it takes the HSE to identify the breach and help put it right.
